CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — A beloved Czech School tradition is being revived after it was suspended during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Czech School Chili Supper will be held Saturday, March 8, 2025, in the St. Ludmila Church Bingo Hall (lower level of church building) at 211 21st Ave. SW, from 4 – 6 p.m.

Cost is $7 for a bowl of homemade chili, carrot & celery relish, rye bread, crackers, piece of cake and juice.

The last Chili Supper just squeaked under the wire in early March 2020, before widespread closings due to the pandemic.

Organizers say the event is “back by popular demand” this year and is open to all.

Although not typically considered a Czech food, Chili Suppers originated as a fundraiser for the Cedar Rapids Czech School generations ago, originally in the Kuba Funeral Home annex on Second Avenue SE, then the St. Wenceslaus Church gym and finally, to St. Ludmila’s Church.

Bake sales, featuring Czech kolaches and other favorites have been a part of the fundraiser in years past.

Czech School celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2019, having been founded in 1870 by Bohemian immigrants in Cedar Rapids.

Students have met virtually due to the pandemic, but plans are underway to return to in-person classes, said Czech School Board President Judy Vondracek.

More information should be available at the Chili Supper.
