UPDATE: See new auction information at end.
Time to say good-bye to another homegrown store in Cedar Rapids.
Smulekoff’s Home Store, 97 Third Ave. SE, has been a downtown Cedar Rapids institution since 1889; an incredible 125-year run. The riverfront store reopened after flooding in 2008, but management decided to take a buy-out from the city and close its doors as of the end of this month.
Many customers will miss the downtown location to buy quality sofas, mattresses and other furniture; the employees will undoubtedly miss their co-workers and customers and Cedar Rapids natives like me will miss their Christmas displays.
Along with Killian’s and Armstrong’s and other stores, the wintertime window displays gave downtown Cedar Rapids that holiday magic. Read more about the post-flood restoration of the nativity set here.
Smulekoff’s will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Friday, Nov. 28, 2014.
UPDATE An auction for remaining items will take place beginning at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 29. The auction planned for Sunday, Nov. 30, is no longer scheduled.
