CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa — The Cedar Rapids Community School District Board of Education has appointed a new board secretary, the fourth person in that position this year.
Jillian Schulte, who previously served as Director of Magnet Programming for the district, was sworn in by President Cindy Garlock at the School Board meeting Monday, Aug. 25, 2025.
Schulte follows Karla Hogan, District Deputy and Chief Financial Officer, who served as interim board secretary this summer.
Hogan replaced Kami Steichen, who was appointed as the new board secretary on Feb. 3 of this year, following the resignation of Ryan Rydstrom.

Rydstrom held the positions of board secretary and chief of staff for less than two years, starting in April 2023 and was on leave, but still employed by the district until his resignation took effect in June of this year.
Legal notices in July 2024 showed Rydstrom’s salary as $142,770.
School District spokeswoman Heather Butterfield said Rydstrom and Steichen both resigned from the district and Hogan served as interim secretary until Schulte’s appointment, adding that Hogan did not receive additional compensation for serving in that role.
Schulte has been with the district for many years in various roles, Butterfield said in an email, and is now serving as Administrator to the Office of the Superintendent and board secretary, with a salary of $139,992.
