On a freelance assignment this weekend on a farm in western Iowa, I bumped into former U.S. Sen. Tom Harkin, looking rather refreshed after being retired since the end of his term in January. Harkin last month endorsed Hillary Clinton for the Democratic nomination for president and wasn’t back-tracking on his decision.

It’s no wonder that some of the vendors were a bit overwhelmed at the first Market After Dark in Cedar Rapids. Organizers said the inaugural event on Aug. 29, 2015, drew an estimated crowd of 34,000 to downtown Cedar Rapids.
