The gardens at Noelridge Park, at Council Street and Collins Road NE, won second place in an international contest last year and for the second time, will be entered in the competition.

Linn County Master Gardener, Becki Lynch, is again leading efforts with the garden design.

CEDAR RAPIDS – The Cedar Rapids Parks and Recreation Department is excited to announce the Noelridge Park
and Greenhouse entry into the All America Selection (AAS) Display Garden Landscape Contest again this year.

This is the second year of competition participation in a joint effort with the Friends of Noelridge, Goodwill Industries, Linn County Master Gardeners and the City of Cedar Rapids Parks Department. The Noelridge AAS competition garden was awarded 2nd place in the international contest last year with its woven willow structures in the butterfly and vegetable gardens.

The 2015 AAS contest theme is “Geometry” in the garden and the Noelridge garden will expand upon that theme to use geometric shapes to feature “art” in the garden. The Friends of Noelridge have had busy start to the growing season, sowing the seeds, propagating plants and preparing the beds.

With the help of the folks from Goodwill Industries Dayhab, the flower garden and the vegetable garden are planted and ready for visitors. As the plants within the gardens come into flower, they will be highlighted with decorative garden frames. The frames will be moved around within the garden to correspond with plants’ peak beauty The gardens are
sure to be changing throughout the growing season so stop by often.

The gardens are themed “Art in the Park” and several public events are being planned at Noelridge. A number of Linn Area Photography Club and Friends of Noelridge photographers will be in the gardens on Wednesday, July 29 to assist visitors in taking photographs of the gardens. They will be available for questions and will be providing tips to folks interested in taking pictures of the flowers along with the butterflies and birds that the gardens attract. Photographers will be on hand from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm on July 29, so please stop by for an informal photography opportunity.

The Linn County Master Gardeners and Friends of Noelridge will host garden tours on Wednesday, September 2. Tours will be available from 5:00 pm until 6:30 pm and will meet near the Noelridge Greenhouse parking lot. All of the flower gardens at Noelridge will be at their peak, so this will be an excellent opportunity to enjoy their beauty and to learn more about varieties of plants that can be grown successfully in this area.
