Independence, Iowa, is home to one of the largest remaining grist mills in the state.
The Wapsipinicon Mill, built in 1867 to 1870, is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
Overlooking the Wapsipinicon River at 100 First St. W, the interior offers breathtaking views of the dam through some of its more than 100 windows.
The towering six-story mill, built with a heavy timber frame, is owned and operated by the Buchanan County Historical Society and is free to visit. Donations are accepted at the door.
Visitors can learn how the mill was used for grinding grains and see some of the original equipment, along with a scale model built by a former employee.
From 8 a.m. to noon Saturdays, through Oct. 14, a farmers market with 20 or more vendors selling produce and other items takes place outside the mill; another perfect reason to make the trip.
