Stirring up a hornet’s nest: what to do
Dawn Lively had a conundrum. Some type of buzzing, stinging insects had moved into a clothesline pipe near an area of the yard that she and her husband often used. Homeowners might attack any type of stinging insect with the deadliest force possible, but Dawn was looking for a more natural approach, especially if the […]
Beauty of weeds in the eye of the “bee”h
Overnight, my yard has exploded into a sea of yellow. Rather than go through my usual, futile, efforts to eradicate the dandelions this year, though, I’m turning them over to the bees. Dandelions are among the early plants that provide pollen and nectar for bees when they emerge in the spring. Increasingly, more people are […]

Until now. The DNR reported today that a landowner in […]
“Lazy for the bees” and other reasons to
You might have seen a piece of news recently about allowing dandelions to grow to help bees survive, especially in early spring. As a homeowner with a front yard that right now is bursting with dandelions, I’d have to agree with that reasoning, or whatever else supports the current look of my lawn. “Farmer Dave” […]
How to bring native pollinators back to ...
Just love this new statewide program coming from the Blank Park Zoo in Des Moines. The zoo is teaming up with 10 organizations to introduce Plant.Grow.Fly., a conservation effort to bring back native pollinators. Through Plant.Grow.Fly., Iowans are encouraged to plant pollinator habitat in yards, schools and businesses.
