The potato-planting tradition on Good Friday could be premature for 2023. What has been a particularly cold spring might not bode well for getting potatoes in the ground this Friday, April 7, with temperatures dipping around the freezing mark just the week before. Planting potatoes on Good Friday isn’t always feasible, but for 2022, it might make sense. Gardening folklore that calls for planting potatoes on Good Friday could create issues with the crop-devouring Colorado potato beetle, according to at least one Iowa gardener. The organic gardener said he has successfully avoided the voracious beetle by waiting until around June 1 to plant his potatoes. Planting early almost ensures that the Colorado potato […]

Fans of the Old Farmer’s Almanac are aware of the practice of planting by phases of the moon. According to this gardening tradition, flowers and vegetables that bear crops above ground should be planted during the light, or waxing, of the moon, from the day the moon is new to the day it is full. Planting potatoes on Good Friday and con...
I can’t imagine that too many Iowa gardeners will be planting potatoes in accordance with the Good Friday tradition this year. The ground currently is too cold and soggy to plant potatoes or much of anything else and Good Friday falls on March 29 this year – the earliest it’s been in five years.
