MONMOUTH, ILL. – Why does the president of the Iowa Nut Growers Association live in Illinois?
Chris Rice, who is organizing a tour of Gary Fernald’s property near Monmouth, Ill., said it’s because Fernald’s climate is closer to Iowa’s than that of southern Illinois, which makes up most of the Illinois Nut Growers Association.
The free tour, on Saturday, Sept. 14, sounds like a great opportunity to learn about growing nut trees and more.

Back by popular demand this tour will be held on Saturday, September 14th. We hold these tours to inspire you and give you the knowledge needed to plant your own Edible Forest. This Edible Forest has been decades in the making and is the life’s work of an elderly man that is currently the President of the Iowa Nut Growers Association and is an expert on genetics suited to the short season/USDA Zone 5 climate. Participants with land will be given free Far Northern Pecan Seedlings to add to your Edible Forest:
