When giving thanks this Thursday, remember your local growers and producers who make those delectable meals possible!

I stocked up for Thanksgiving dinner at the indoor Mount Vernon Farmers Market on Saturday, where I bought stone-ground corn; sweet potatoes; carrots; squash; locally produced meats; kale and more. (The tantalizing chocolates from Mount Vernon Confections are a given, of course, though they are too tempting to survive more than a few minutes!)

If you still haven’t made it to one of the indoor markets, check out the Homegrown list and stop by. You might be surprised at how much less you have to buy at the store and how good everything tastes when it’s fresh and locally grown. (Plus, you don’t want to fall into this trend, as the latest Gallup Poll shows Americans’ eating habits worsening.)

As a gardener, I appreciate how much work is involved, so my thanks go to Farmer Dave, Laura Krouse at Abbe Hills Farm, Lois Pavelka, Danielle Martin and Laura Strabala and all of the many other hard-working growers and producers in Iowa who fill our plates at this time and throughout the year.

Happy Thanksgiving!
