April can be so unpredictable: cold, wet and dreary one day, sunny and warm the next, and so it was this weekend.

While the weather for Saturday’s EcoFest in New Bohemia wasn’t ideal for an outdoor festival, many activities were indoors so it was definitely not a wash-out. For me, it was a bird-brained day (I learned birds are actually quite intelligent); I was able to see the touching “Pale Male” documentary and watched the presentation by The Macbride Raptor Center Project.

Vendors and customers were all-smiles Sunday, April 26, at the Hiawatha Farmers Market, where the sun was shining and the season’s first produce, plants and more were sold.

Hiawatha traditionally has the first outdoor market of the season in late April. Many others start soon. Find a list of more than 50 markets here on the Homegrown list and see more from this weekend’s EcoFest and opening day of the market, below:eco crowdeco kestreleco feed iowa first
