Over 650 people attended the Fourth Annual Eastern Iowa Orchid Show at Noelridge Greenhouse in Cedar Rapids over the past weekend. The attendees voted for their favorite orchid display and race was very tight. Eastern Iowa Orchid Society was the winner with the Illowa Orchid Society of the Quad Cities and Iowa Orchids of Des Moines close second and third place. The show was acclaimed by visitors for the beauty of the flowers and exhibits as well as the lovely venue of the show. Next year’s show will be Oct 15-16, 2016.

CEDAR RAPIDS – The Noelridge Greenhouse was a welcoming spot to spend time this weekend, after our first frost, for the most part, put an end to the growing season.

Hundreds of colorful orchids in bloom filled the greenhouse during the Fourth Annual Eastern Iowa Orchid Show and Sale.

Eight visiting orchid clubs, in addition to the Eastern Iowa Orchid Society, and several vendors have showcased stunning displays of the exotic blooms inside the warm greenhouse.

The show continues from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, 2015, at the Noelridge Greenhouse, 4900 Council St. NE. The event is free and open to the public.

Eastern Iowa Orchid Society’s Bill Snyder noted that while orchids are thought to be tropical – and many are – “they come from all over.”

Minnesota’s state flower, for example, is the Showy Lady’s-Slipper (Cypripedium reginae) one of 43 orchid species that grow in Minnesota.

Snyder said foreign countries can only send orchids to the United States as bareroot, except for Taiwan, which has a USDA inspection process that allows the plants to be shipped,  ultimately being sold in stores such as Hy-Vee.
