Last year, the city paid more than $5 million for the site with the intention to demolish the building, which was flooded in 2008 and again in 2016.

According to the city assessor’s website, the property was valued at $2.3 million in 2015.

Cooper’s Mill, located along the Cedar River at 100 F Ave. NW, reopened after the 2008 flood, but remained closed in 2016.

A liquidation sale was held earlier this year.

While not considered a historic site — the 83-room hotel opened in 1972 — the Cooper’s Mill restaurant, formerly Village Inn, was a popular local spot known for its breakfasts, pies and more.

The area will become part of the city’s flood control system.
