IOWA CITY – The first Lucky’s Market in Iowa opened this week at the former Sycamore Mall in Iowa City and joins other grocery stores that have opened in recent months with a focus on local products.

“It’s just really great food at a really great price,” Lucky’s regional manager, Mike Rogers, said after a “local food fest” Friday at the new Iowa City location, 1668 Sycamore St.

The store opened Wednesday, July 1, and anchors the mall, now known as the Iowa City Marketplace.

Rogers said the store emphasizes local products. Signs noted growers with items such as broccoli from Northern Ridge Farm in Oxford; cabbage from Organic Greens Farm in Washington, Iowa; and organic peppers from Maharishi Vedic City Organics in Fairfield.

Just last year, both The Fresh Market and New Pioneer Food Co-op opened in Cedar Rapids, offering more options for organic, natural and  local foods in Eastern Iowa.

Lucky’s has a similar focus, centered around affordable prices.

Chefs and food lovers Trish and Bo Sharon opened the first Lucky’s Market in Boulder, Colorado, in 2003. The stores are now in 10 other states. For more information on Lucky’s Market, go to: www.luckysmarket.com, see more photos below, and read related articles here:
