Organizers canceled the 2020 Project GREEN Open Gardens Weekend in Iowa City due to the pandemic, but the event is back for 2021 with more than 30 gardens, free to tour.

Gardens, which include 29 private sites in Iowa City and Coralville, as well as the historic Ashton House and Xtream Arena roof garden, will be open 5-8 p.m. Saturday, July 10, and 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday, July 11.

Visitors can pick up maps at sponsor locations before the event, or at the historic Ashton House, 820 Park Road, Iowa City, during garden tour hours.

The sponsorships allow the event to be free. See the list of sponsors, below:

Project GREEN, an all-volunteer organization, was launched in 1968 as a byproduct of an Iowa City subcommittee, Citizens for a Better Iowa City. The nonprofit has funded more than $2 million in local beautification projects.

Linn County Master Gardeners also typically hold a garden walk at this time of year. The group scaled back their garden walk in 2020 due to the pandemic, and decided to hold off on the annual event until 2022.
