CEDAR RAPIDS – Czech Village received approval to hold a limited number of farmers markets this summer and the last one is fast-approaching.

The final Village Farmers Market of the 2015 season will be Saturday, Aug. 22, from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Sokol Park, near 16th Avenue and A Street SW.

Czech Village supporters will use proceeds from the vendor fees for space at the market to rebuild the Riverside Roundhouse, where markets were held for decades before the 2008 flood.

“We’ve raised some money but not a lot,” said Czech Village Association president, Michelle Bell, noting the late start of the season, in June. “Everyone has been happy with the quality and the purpose.”

Markets, held twice-per-month, have been building slowly and steadily, said Hans Heitmann, who works with Gordy’s Goodies, which sells fresh produce at the market.

“It’s been getting better and better,” Heitmann said, adding that a longer season would be beneficial to both customers and vendors.

Besides fresh fruits and vegetables, baked goods, such as kolaches, plants and handmade jewelry and other items are featured at the market.
