CEDAR RAPIDS – Lion Bridge Brewing Co., in Czech Village, is combining two things that many Iowans love: beer and mushrooms.

Mushroom beer has become somewhat of a tradition for the neighborhood brewery during the annual Houby Days celebration, happening May 20-22, 2016.

And this time, they’re doing it twice.

Chanterelle Disaster (Mushroom Porter, 5.8%) is made with Chanterelle mushrooms that contribute a unique fruit character to their world-class porter, and Oyster Disaster (Mushrooms Porter, 5.8%) is an oyster mushroom porter that Lion Bridge has previously featured during Houby Days. Both are available for a limited time only.

It might be considered sacrilegious to use morel mushrooms in beer, as the sponge-like delicacies are a rarity, found only in woodland areas in the spring, but you can see morels at Lion Bridge during the Houby Days mushroom contest on Saturday, May 21. The winners will be displayed at the brewery, at 59 16th Ave. SW, from 3:30-4:30 p.m. that day.

Also, for those who like their beer and mushrooms, but prefer them separately, Lion Bridge will be hosting a night farmers market on select Thursdays this summer, from 5-8 p.m. One of the vendors will be Mushroom Mills.
