After going virtual in 2021, due to the pandemic, the Winter Gardening Fair plans to return to an in-person format for 2022.

The daylong event, hosted by the Linn County ISU Extension Master Gardeners, is scheduled to return to the Kirkwood Linn County Regional Center, 1770 Boyson Road, in Hiawatha, on Feb. 19, 2022.
Tuition of $59 for adults, and $30 for high school and college students, includes lunch and five different class sessions.

Gardening in a derecho-impacted landscape, designing sustainability into your plantings, growing vegetables and herbs, and creating beautiful outdoor spaces are just some of the topics you can dig into at the 2022 Winter Gardening Fair. Hosted by Iowa State Extension and Outreach Linn County Master Gardeners, the event is back in person this year at Kirkwood Regional Center on Saturday, February 19, 2022.
“Interest in gardening continues to grow, and people are looking for localized, relevant information they can use in their home gardens,” said Sandy Rosenberger, Linn County Master Gardener Coordinator. “We’ll be offering over 70 classes that will be taught by experienced Master Gardeners and faculty from Iowa State University. Some of our topics will include growing hydrangeas, caring for newly planted trees, vertical gardening, and how to attract pollinators to your yard. Our event sells out, so be sure to register ahead of time!”
Tuition for the day-long event is $59 for adults and $30 for high school and college students. It includes lunch and five different class sessions. Participants can also browse horticulture-related society displays and vendors. Event check-in begins at 8:00 am, February 19, 2022.
In addition to outdoor gardening information, there are sessions on houseplants, hydroponics, seed starting, hands-on workshops, and more. Thirteen-year Master Gardener veteran Phil Pfister will be teaching several courses, including one on hydroponics. Phil said, “I’ve had an interest in hydroponics for some years. What I would like for the attendees to take away is that you can grow leafy greens all year long, without taking up much space. You can grow radishes or even tomatoes. In our class, we will provide the basic tools for growing in hydroponics.”
“This is a great event leading into spring, while we are in the planning stages of gardening,” Phil said. “A lot of ideas that come out of the Winter Gardening Fair can be incorporated in our full year planning for our flower and vegetable gardens, overall landscaping, lawns, insect management, pollinators, general yard and garden maintenance, and creative ideas for ways to improve and beautify our yards, gardens, environment.”
