Warm up at a winter market to fight the ...
Ali Alldredge sent out a reminder about this Saturday’s winter farmers market in Ely: Join us inside the Ely Public Library from 9:00 a.m. until noon for food, crafts, and conversation. The library’s (free) beginning knitting/crafting group will follow at 12:30–all are welcome. Also, this Saturday, “Farmer Dave” Miller won’t be making his usual appearance […]

A feature on The Authentic Storytelling Project today about Homegrown Iowan offered an opportunity for me to reflect on the future of the website as we approach our anniversary. Homegrown Iowan is an extension of what I’ve been doing for years as a journalist: spreading the word about local foods, farmers markets, gardening and events […]
Buy local: where to find those last-minu...
I really hope this weather clears so I can make it to one of my favorite winter farmers markets this Saturday. Before Thanksgiving, I stocked up on local produce at Mount Vernon’s winter market and found everything I needed for several dishes, including sweet potato curry. The curry turned out quite well for my first […]
Top 5 Reasons to Shop at a Farmers Marke...
URBANA – I made baba ghanoush today, thanks to a short trip I made Saturday to the indoor farmers market in Urbana. The key ingredient, eggplant, isn’t easy to find in Iowa in November, but there it was, at Marion Moser’s table, along with squash, potatoes, apples, daikon radishes and organic Moser’s Garden popcorn. Call for winter farmers markets
The end of the farmers market season can be a bit depressing for me, but one thing has changed in recent years to serve as a bright spot in these dark days. A growing number of indoor markets offer some of the same fresh produce, local honey, farm-fresh eggs, home-baked bread, hormone-free meat and more.
Farmers market season continues in Easte...
As our own Iowa gardens near their end, it’s comforting to know that local foods fans can still get their fill at area farmers markets. Markets in Cedar Rapids, Hiawatha, Iowa City and other towns continue to operate, with some running through the end of October. If your travels take you to Belle Plaine, Independence […]
Still time to check out Marion’s new mar
Marion’s Farmers Market is in a new venue this year and if you haven’t checked it out yet, you have one more opportunity. The last market of the season is this Saturday, Sept. 28, 2013, from 8-11:30 a.m. at the depot in City Square Park, Seventh Avenue and 10th Street. That’s right in the heart […]
Last Downtown Farmers Market in Cedar Ra...
It may be the last Downtown Farmers Market of the season this Saturday in Cedar Rapids, but you still have the opportunity to find fresh produce and more at many Eastern Iowa markets. I’ve been to several small-town farmers markets this year and had a great time at every one of them. Today, I made […]
