Admittedly, I’m not a big reality TV show fan, but I watched this season of “The Bachelor” to see how Iowa would be portrayed on the small-screen. Then, “American Idol” came along with a few Iowa connections, including one contestant who made the Top 12, and now, Top 11.
As spring rolls around to keep gardeners like me occupied outdoors, I don’t know that I’ll keep up on the progress of our two celebrity Iowans, but wanted to recap in case anyone else has been following along.
Arlington, Iowa, native, Chris Soules gave his final rose, and an engagement ring, to Whitney Bischoff on the season finale of “The Bachelor,” making it perhaps the first time that Iowa has successfully recruited a big-city nurse from Chicago to a town of just over 400 people. We wish them the best with life on the farm, but first, Soules is taking another celebrity turn on “Dancing with the Stars.” The season premieres tonight, March 16, 2015, on ABC.
Nothing against Chris Soules, but my money is on Nastia Liukin, who also has an Iowa connection, as the teammate of West Des Moines-native Shawn Johnson, both gold medalists in the 2008 Olympics. Johnson went on to win “Dancing with the Stars,” and later was on the “All Star” version with Derek Hough, who will be Liukin’s partner this season. That’s about the extent of my knowledge of the show, but best of luck to Iowa’s Prince Farming-turned-dancer.
Ankeny, Iowa, native Maddie Walker has made a great run so far on “American Idol,” and has a great presence, especially as one of the younger contestants, at age 17. If country music is your thing, Maddie’s your gal. She’ll continue on American Idol this week, and hopefully, beyond.
