Mount Vernon – It’s not often that we eat out, but I make it a point to eat locally when we do. So, I’m joining the masses in mourning this week, as word of the Lincoln Cafe’s closing spreads.

We were just there less than two weeks ago, when I started eating my tomato tarragon soup before I shot a photo – what was I thinking??

The artwork, brick walls, friendly staff and of course, the delectable meals made the Lincoln Cafe unique to Mount Vernon and all of Iowa. What a treasure.

Here is owner Matt Steigerwald’s Facebook announcement: “Facebook is an odd forum for this news but I guess it’s as appropriate as any. I’ve decided to close the Lincoln Cafe for good at the end of this month. It’s been a pleasure to say the least. After 12 years it’s just time for a new challenge. Thanks to everyone who has supported the cafe through the years and my amazing staff as well.
The Lincoln Winebar will stay open and as strong as ever! This page will become the home of the Winebar on FB. We’ll post pics, music info, and pizza specials. Please keep in touch. We surely will. Thank you so much! ”

As Matt mentioned, the nearby Lincoln Winebar remains open, so all is not lost. Also, I know that Carrie and Andy Schumacher, owners of Cobble Hill, have a good thing going at their new restaurant in Cedar Rapids. Andy worked under Matt, so again, hope, and the focus on local foods, lives on.

If you’d like to add to the tributes, see the Lincoln Cafe on Facebook.
