Red-tailed hawk tended by parents in Ced...
Meeting nature photographers Linda and Robert Scarth today was both a pleasure and a bit surreal. I watched as they set up their cameras in Cedar Rapids and joked with them about bird-watching. It turned out that’s exactly what they had in mind. A young red-tailed hawk had fallen from its nest, or ventured out […]

CEDAR RAPIDS – Market-goers who fondly recall the Riverside Roundhouse will soon be able to attend farmers markets in Czech Village. With less than two weeks remaining, the Czech Village Association is still accepting applications for vendors. Spots remain available for produce vendors, with a few spaces for crafts.

CEDAR RAPIDS – With shouts of “I want to know if it’s GMO,” a group of about 50 activists took to the streets in Saturday’s March Against Monsanto. The roundhouse, built in 1962 and used for farmers markets until 2007, was deconstructed after the 2008 flood by volunteers, led by Alex Andersen, owner of Ernie’s Tavern. Since then, the […]

In case you missed the Easter Showcase last month, you’ll soon have another chance to visit the Noelridge Greenhouse. The free milkweed plant given with each purchase, in itself, is a great reason to go to the Mother’s Day Showcase, to help our monarch butterflies. In addition, you’ll see row upon row of flowers and […]
Morel mushrooms and Czech traditions cel...
As a Cedar Rapids native living near Czech Village, Houby Days was a part of my childhood, so I was happy to be involved in writing about this year’s upcoming three-day festival for the Czech Village Association. Houby is the Czech word for mushroom and morel mushrooms are central to many of the events during […]
Find the “missing link” to health at far
By Cindy Hadish/For Radish Magazine My hometown hosts one of the largest farmers markets in the Midwest, but the Downtown Cedar Rapids market’s sea of people, produce, products and pets isn’t for everyone. The crowds that keep some people at bay, however, serve as a boon to the 200-plus vendors, many of whom tell me […]
