URBANA – I made baba ghanoush today, thanks to a short trip I made Saturday to the indoor farmers market in Urbana. The key ingredient, eggplant, isn’t easy to find in Iowa in November, but there it was, at Marion Moser’s table, along with squash, potatoes, apples, daikon radishes and organic Moser’s Garden popcorn. Now […]

Iowa farmers markets move indoors for th...
By Cindy Hadish (c) Homegrown Iowan Fans of local foods don’t have a long wait between the end of the outdoor farmers market season in Iowa and the start of indoor markets. The last of those “summer” markets ended this week, and already, customers can find their fill of fresh produce, baked goods, local meats […]
Call for winter farmers markets
The end of the farmers market season can be a bit depressing for me, but one thing has changed in recent years to serve as a bright spot in these dark days. A growing number of indoor markets offer some of the same fresh produce, local honey, farm-fresh eggs, home-baked bread, hormone-free meat and more.

It may be the last Downtown Farmers Market of the season this Saturday in Cedar Rapids, but you still have the opportunity to find fresh produce and more at many Eastern Iowa markets. I’ve been to several small-town farmers markets this year and had a great time at every one of them. Today, I made […]
Enjoy final Dog Days of Summer at the Do...
The farmers market season is winding down, at least for the large-scale markets held in Downtown Cedar Rapids. Just two more of these remain, including one this Saturday, Sept. 7, from 7:30 a.m. to noon. The last will be Saturday, Sept. 21, 2013. The Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance notes that more than 220 vendors will […]
Book Review: Gaining Ground: A story of ...
My sister just read Gaining Ground this week, finishing it with tears streaming down her face. It’s no wonder, though I tend to more readily recall the book’s amusing passages from my reading of the memoir earlier this summer. While we both identify with author Forrest Pritchard’s attempts to save the family farm, our emotional […]
Downtown Farmers Market set for Saturday...
The season’s abundance will undoubtedly be evident at this Saturday’s Downtown Farmers Market in Cedar Rapids. You can always find details about upcoming farmers markets on the Homegrown list and here is more about Saturday’s event from the Cedar Rapids Metro Economic Alliance:
Slice of Americana awaits at Iowa farmer...
When Keith and Karen Lackore ran out of neighbors to bestow their extra large, extra sweet, candy onions, they turned to an alternative close to home. “They can only eat so much,” Karen joked about the couple’s neighbors, while selling vegetables at the Oxford Farmers Market. The Lackores were first-time vendors at the market, which […]
